Indian Welfare Society, Slough General Secretary:-K S Parhar Chairman :- J.S Gidda
The Chairman Dear sir Sub: Cricket The recent controversy about the current Indian cricket team’s tour of Australia is a matter of grave concern for the lovers of the game. There was a time when cricket used to be considered a gentleman’s game. With the introduction of sponsorships and the money involved, the whole image of the game has changed. Now the aim of most players is to win by fair means or foul. In the past, batsmen used to walk when they knew they were out and did not wait for the Umpires finger to go up. Not any more, they wait for the umpire’s decision and are happy if they can get away with the Umpire not raising his finger. Another point worth mentioning is sledging. This has been going on for a long time but has been on the increase for the last ten or twelve years and the worst culprits are the Australians. They have become so used to winning matches that when things are not going their way, they resort to such sorts of dirty tactics that beggar’s belief. If they cannot get an opponent batsman out fairly, they use sledging, cheating and pressurising the umpires until they get the result in their favour. Even Australian great Shane Warne said few days ago that Australian cricketers should stop being arrogant although he was as arrogant himself when he used to play. Take the example of Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh’s ban for three matches. Half a dozen Australian players ganged up to complain that they heard him using racist language against one of their players. The only other Indian player on the field, Sachin Tendulkar gave evidence that the allegations were baseless but his evidence was ignored by the match referee. Sport is supposed to create and enhance better understanding between individuals of different nations. What is actually happening is quite the reverse especially by the Australian cricketers. Yours sincerely Chairman Senior Vice President Gen. Secretary Vice President To Mr Manmohan Singh Sub:Tourism in India and Reservation With a view to visit Sikh shrines, The Chairman travelled nearly 15,000 kilometres in all India permit taxi/commercial vehicle between 20th Sept and 4rth Dec 2007.He was shocked to learn that almost every state is charging exorbitant amount of money just to drive through national highway. He had to pay Rs 3250 for 3 months to Haryana govt. Rs 2250 for a month to Himachal, Rs 5450 for a month to utranchal, Rs 400 a day to Rajasthan, Rs 450 per day to U.P and Rs 450 per day to Madhya Pradesh. We presume that Karnataka and Punjab are not charging such tolls at the moment. Is this the type of India our freedom fighters envisaged that commercial vehicles from one state have to pay taxes to pass through the other states of the Union of India. Does this not have an adverse effect on tourism industry? I will not recommend members of my organisation to undertake such venture. We wonder what will happen if Punjab govt.started charging similar taxes particularly when great efforts are being made to encourage business with Pakistan which will incur an increase in the cost of goods passing through. I strongly feel that this is an unfair tax on people visiting religious places such as Manikaran Sahib in Himachal, Hemkunt Sahib in Utranchal, Hazoor Sahib (Nander) in Karnataka and Patna Sahib in Bihar. Surely these taxes by various states on taxis encourage malpractices such as pretending taxes as private vehicles to avoid these taxes . No wonder raw material coming to Punjab becomes expensive after paying such taxes and makes Punjab industries less competitive. I urge you to look into this matter seriously and stop this unfair practice. Reservation:- We understand that constitution of India made provision for reservation of jobs for a limited period to bring the people of so called castes upto the level of other people. Although sixty years have passed since independence, the reservation system continues causing a lot of resentment and frustration amongst young people from non reservation communities. After sixty years, the economic condition of these reservation communities has become better than the mainstream communities and is about time that whole system of reservation came to an end as it causes a lot of friction within the society threatening the very system of India. We have noticed especially in Punjab that recently qualified youngsters are unable to find jobs due to quota system. This causes grate anxiety and stress amongst youngsters or fall victims to unscrupulous agents who show them the prospects of the jobs abroad which are not there. We consider that if the power of states to impose unfair taxes is not curtailed and the reservation/quota or jobs and grants is not brought to end, the country may plunge into chaos and endanger the very fabric of society. We urge you to tackle these two very urgent issues seriously and find an amicable and permanent solution. Thanking you Yours sincerely Chairman ; Senior Vice President Gen. Secretary Vice President 1.Copy to Ms Sonia Gandhi, President Congress Party |
